Overview: Why a hardware wallet matters
A hardware wallet like Trézor® protects private keys offline in a dedicated device, dramatically reducing exposure to online threats. It ensures that signing transactions and seed generation happens on-device, mitigating malware, phishing, and remote attackers. This guide walks you through the safe first-time setup and key ongoing maintenance tasks you should perform after purchase.
What you'll need before you start
- New (unopened) Trézor device and its USB cable.
- A computer (desktop recommended) or Android device with latest OS and a Chromium-based browser for web app usage.
- A clean, offline space to write down your recovery seed (avoid photos or digital copies).
Step 1 — Check the box & unseal
Inspect packaging for tamper evidence. Only proceed if the seal is intact and the device appears new. If anything looks compromised, contact vendor support immediately.
Step 2 — Connect & open Trezor Suite
Connect the device via USB and open the official Trezor Suite web or desktop app. Follow on-screen installation prompts — you will be guided to install any required firmware and software components. The official setup flow is designed to be clear and takes roughly 10–20 minutes for first-time users.
Important: firmware updates
If prompted to update firmware, follow the Suite instructions carefully. Firmware updates are critical for security, but they will wipe device state if interrupted — keep the cable connected and stable while updating.
Step 3 — Create a PIN
Set a PIN on the device when prompted. The PIN protects physical access to your wallet. Choose a PIN you can remember but not easily guessable. Never share the PIN with anyone; the device will block repeated incorrect attempts.
Step 4 — Write down your recovery seed
The recovery seed (12–24 words) is the only reliable backup of your wallet. Trezor generates the seed on-device; write it down on the provided card or a metal backup for long-term durability. Never store the seed as a photo, text file, or cloud backup. Store the written seed in multiple secure physical locations if needed.
Seed safety checklist
- Never enter the seed into a computer or phone.
- Never reveal the seed to anyone or any service claiming to help restore your wallet.
- Consider a metal backup plate for fire and water resistance.
Step 5 — Test a small transaction
Send a small test amount from another wallet or exchange to the newly-created address and confirm the transaction on your Trezor device. This confirms the address derivation and end-to-end workflow are correct.
Ongoing maintenance & best practices
Regularly check for firmware updates, keep the Trezor Suite up-to-date, and maintain your physical backups. For large holdings consider multisig setups or an additional device stored separately. Avoid interacting with unknown apps or websites asking for your seed or private key.
Advanced options
Experienced users can explore advanced features: passphrase protection (adds a hidden wallet), coin-specific settings, and third-party wallet integrations. Passphrases increase security but also add complexity — document procedures for any recovery carefully.
Final reminder
Your recovery seed equals access to funds. Protect it as you would any high-value physical asset.
